All cash commodities must meet three basic conditions to be successfully traded in the futures market:

1. It has to be standardized and, for agricultural and industrial commodities, must be in a basic, raw, unprocessed state.
2. Perishable commodities must have an adequate shelf life, because delivery on a futures contract is deferred.
3. The cash commodity's price must fluctuate enough to create uncertainty, which means both risk and potential profit. From these commodities a futures contract is established. A futures contract is a term used to designate any or all contracts covering the sale of commodities (including financial instruments and cash representing indexes) for future delivery made on an exchange and subject to its rules. So, by meeting these three criteria, multiple futures contracts are established every weekday on the stock exchange.
